Company Information

Echelon is the leading supplier of control networking hardware and software and a pioneer in the development of smart metering solutions. Our two product lines, LonWorks infrastructure (LWI) and Networked Energy Services (NES) are used as the foundations of energy-efficient systems in homes, commercial buildings, stores, restaurants, municipal lighting installations and electricity grids. Our products are used as the foundation of an energy-efficient infrastructure. They allow applications such as green buildings with smart environmental systems that easily change to meet tenant needs, automatically respond to reduce energy use when the electricity grid is strained, and improve the building’s overall energy efficiency by as much as 70 percent. Our products are also the basis for smart street lighting systems that automatically brighten or dim lamps to improve safety, slow traffic, and save energy.

Two Main Product Lines

Our LonWorks infrastructure product line consists of system and networking infrastructure products that add intelligence and connectivity to everyday devices such as air conditioners, electricity meters, light switches, thermostats, and valves. Products and systems embedded with our LonWorks technology work together to monitor and save energy; lower costs; improve productivity; and enhance service, quality, safety, and convenience. We sell these products and related services to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators in the building, industrial, transportation, utility, home, and other automation markets. The basic technology at the core of the LonWorks product line—the communication protocol, and power line signaling and twisted-pair signaling technologies—is incorporated into standards for control worldwide including North American train control, semiconductor equipment manufacturing, control networking, and building automation; European building automation and petrol station control; and Chinese smart communities and buildings.

Our Networked Energy Services (NES) product line consists of smart electricity meters, data concentrators, and system software, which utilities use to offer next-generation metering to consumers, optimize grids, improve operational efficiency, and deliver multiple services. NES meters automatically report electricity use, identify outages, report theft, and remotely connect and re-connect service. They help utilities maximize their energy-conservation efforts by managing available energy to avoid blackouts, by reducing the need for more generation, and by monitoring power quality. The underlying technology of the NES system is currently deployed in over 27 million Italian homes. The NES system itself is the smart metering solution for projects underway in Sweden, The Netherlands, Austria, and other countries.

Thousands of companies have adopted our products and technology, which is now installed in almost 100 million devices worldwide.
